Match Report: WCWFC 5-0 Lincoln City

Five-star City ended the season on a high after facing Lincoln City on the final day of the FA Women’s National League season.

Worcester City Women went into the final game of the season knowing that they’ll be playing in the National League for the 2025/26 campaign, after securing fourth-tier football at Sixways Stadium for a second term following the 3-3 draw at Barnsley and Solihull Moors’ home defeat by Northampton Town a fortnight ago.

Today’s game started with City having most of the possession and trying to break the Imps’ defensive high line.

City were creating chances but couldn’t quite get the connection they were after. In the 12th minute, Annie Highway put in a great cross from the right flank, but nobody in a City shirt could jump high enough to connect to the ball.

Eight minutes later, Cerys Dolloway played a great ball over the top for Olivia Mitcham to latch on to. However, her effort, which went over the bar, was in vain, as the linesman had his flag up for offside.

However, a few moments later, the skipper Jessica Fassnidge, after being played through by Shona Baldwin, passed the ball into the net to give City a deserved lead.

City almost added their second shortly after as Olivia Mitcham was denied twice. The number nine latched onto Billingsley’s through ball, but the Imps’ keeper made a good save to push the ball out for a City corner.

Then from the resulting corner from Annie Highway, Mitcham was again denied after she tried to flick the ball into the net.

City continued to have multiple efforts before the break, with Annie Sime’s shot going just wide of the post in the 38th minute, and with Mitcham’s header crashing against the bar after a great corner from Annie Highway.

Highway tried an effort herself two minutes before the break, unfortunately, her effort went over the bar.

In the second half, City had the first chance after Billingsley played in half-time substitute Sophie Griffiths, whose cross was gathered by the Imps’ goalkeeper.

On the 60th-minute mark, Keeley Crew played in a cross to Mitcham, and the striker showed some outrageous skill to flick the ball over the defender’s head, but unfortunately, her volley went well over.

However, nine minutes later, City finally scored their second of the contest after Sophie Griffiths played a great ball to the back and Olivia Mitcham thumped it home.

In the 73rd minute, City added their third goal via Jess Fassnidge, who had no problem dispatching a penalty for her brace. She remained on a roll and just five minutes later scored her third, making it a hat-trick after she was played through by Esme Harris to put City four goals to the good.

The visitors threatened with a free kick from distance moments later, but the shot just went over the crossbar.

In the 86th minute, Keeley Crew was brought down in the area, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot for a second time in the afternoon.

Evie Billingsley made no mistake in dispatching the penalty kick to add City’s fifth to cap off a wonderful afternoon for Worcester City Women in the sunshine.

That’s a wrap for the 2024/2025 season. Thank you all for your continued support, and we’ll see you back at Sixways Stadium in August for the star of the FA WNL season. Fixtures are still yet to be announced so make sure you’re following our social channels to keep up to date.
