JONES – IT’S MY JOB TO MAKE SURE I KEEP THE PLAYERS CONFIDENT

Worcester City Women boss Matt Jones spoke to us following our defeat against Sutton Coldfield and spoke of how he intends to prepare the players for the season's final two games.

“Yeah it would be dead easy to beat ourselves up and don’t get me wrong the players are frustrated, as are the staff because no one likes to lose a game, no one likes to lose a 2-0 lead in a game, but if we think about some of the mini-projects we’ve been working on to make sure we’re competitive in this league, starting games strong has been one of those.”

Jones praised City’s two goal scorers, commending Annie Highway’s “very well executed free kick,” the midfielder’s second in two weeks.

City’s second “very well taken” goal came from Keeley Crew, who Jones described as trying to “smell out the danger” with it being nice to see the “young, up and coming player” getting opportunities on the pitch.

Going forward, Jones assured that he and the team will pick out and identify the learnings from the game "and carry forward” with the match against Barnsley being “an opportunity to apply those lessons.”

“Frustrating outcome and frustrating defeat, but it’s my job to make sure I keep the players confident, keep the spirit high because we’ll need that as we attack the final two league games of the season to increase our chances of achieving our club goal of securing tier four status for another season,” Matt Jones concluded.

Player of the Match Evie Billingsley gave us her thoughts on the game and the challenges that lie ahead...

Speaking after Worcester City Women let slip a goal advantage Evie Billingsley said “I think it was a very frustrating game for all of us, going 2-0 we thought we had the game sealed, covered, but unfortunately, we all made silly mistakes including myself, so it was a very frustrating game, but I think there’s still some positives to take from it going into next week.

Looking ahead to the game at Barnsley in a couple of weeks she explained she remains “feeling positive” and that the team are continuing to have "really good training sessions.” At the moment she felt like it was “the final product” that is missing but that she looks forward to the teams’ next game against Barnsley where she is “sure we [the team] can get a result.”

You can see how Evie and the rest of the team get on when we travel up to Barnsley on Sunday 13th April in our final away clash of the season.
